HOUSTON, Texas – A child is dead after police say he was hit by a pickup truck on Thanksgiving Day.
The incident happened in the 5227 block of Willow Glen Drive around 11:35 a.m.
When police arrived, they said the child was riding a bike when hit by the truck.
Lt. Va’Shawnda McLean with HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division said the driver stopped and is being cooperative.
According to investigators, the 70-year-old driver of the pickup truck called 911 and told them that he did not realize he had hit a child and thought something had fallen off his truck, but when he got out of his vehicle, he noticed a bike underneath his truck, and then he saw the boy’s body in the street.
Houston police said evidence suggests speed was not a factor.
Investigators encourage parents and drivers to be cautious during the busy holiday season.
“Children are going to be children, and they need supervision at all times. So, the reminder is that children need to be supervised. Again, that’s not to say that there’s any fault, lies with the parents or the driver. It’s just a reminder,” said Lt. Va’Shawnda McLean.
