Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles told principals Wednesday that the district will not bring a proposed list of campus consolidations to the board for the 2026–27 school year.
The update comes after weeks of discussion about whether the district would consider closing or merging schools as part of its ongoing systemwide review.
According to Miles, the district still expects that a small number of consolidations may be needed in future years, but no closures will be proposed for the upcoming school year. He said HISD is taking additional time to evaluate long-term facility needs and explore options that ensure any students affected in the future would transition into stronger learning environments.
The update was shared during the district’s monthly principal training and comes as HISD continues several major initiatives, including expanded Sunrise Center services, collaboration with the Houston Food Bank and new district-managed AI tools for teachers.
Miles emphasized that the priority remains providing students with safe, well-equipped campuses and maintaining a high standard of instruction across the district.
HISD plans to continue evaluating facility usage, enrollment trends and campus needs before determining whether consolidations will be considered in later years.
