A high-speed chase that began on the mainland early Thursday morning ended on Pelican Island in Galveston, leaving one person dead after an officer-involved shooting.
The incident began when police tried to stop a driver in Hitchcock for a traffic violation. The situation quickly escalated, leading the driver to Pelican Island, where he drove to the entrance of Seawolf Park and got out of his vehicle.
Authorities say the man fired several shots before officers attempted to talk him into surrendering. People fishing nearby raised concerns for public safety. At one point, it appeared the man might comply, but he then aimed his weapon at officers. An officer fired, striking the man.
He was given first aid on scene and transported to UTMB Galveston, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.
The Texas Rangers are investigating, as is standard for officer-involved shootings in Galveston.
