COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The Texas A&M University chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity has been suspended pending an investigation into hazing allegations, KPRC 2 News has confirmed.
Several pledges had to be hospitalized, according to one of the victims, after an “almost torturous” workout at The Kappa Sigma Lodge on Sunday, Sept. 14.
“You have to put your hands on your heels and squat all as a group. And they’re yelling at you, making you squat together. And that’s where we did three, four or 500 of those,” a victim who asked not to be identified said. “All in the mud all real, real dark, people yelling at you, shining lights in your face, you’re getting dizzy, you’re throwing up.”
During the workout, pledges began to pass out as others kept being forced to complete the activities.
In some cases, the pledges were unable to walk and their urine turned black in the days after the workout, according to the victim and his family.
“My legs wouldn’t move more than a few inches and then I peed and it was almost black,” the victim said.
Some of the victims ended up getting admitted to area hospitals, according to one victim, after being told by fraternity leaders to go to different hospitals and lie to doctors about what actually happened.
“It’s every parent’s nightmare ... to get that phone call that they’re in the emergency room is just absolutely heartbreaking,” a victim’s mother said. “I never imagined that this was something that could even be a possibility.”
While not confirmed by law enforcement, the victim said said many of his pledge brothers were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, which is a rare muscle injury that can be life-threatening.
“The Kappa Sigma Fraternity is aware of an incident involving members of our Texas A&M University Chapter. Any member found to violate the Fraternity’s Code of Conduct, which strictly forbids hazing, will be held accountable. The operations of our Chapter at A&M are suspended pending an investigation,” executive director of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Bradley Bailey wrote in a statement to KPRC 2 News.
In the days since the incident, the victim said pledges have been contacted and told not to tell the truth about what happened.
After KPRC 2 News broke this story on Monday afternoon, fraternity group chats got bombarded with messages about finding the “rat.”
But this victim wanted to speak out to protect those who may follow.
“If nothing changes, someone’s gonna die,” he said. “The main thing has to be that this never happens again.”
The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the incident in a press release Monday and confirmed an investigation is underway.
“Preliminary information indicates that on September 14, a group of prospective new members (pledges) of the fraternity were instructed to attend an event at the off-campus fraternity property. Current members reportedly brought the pledges to a secluded area where they were told to engage in physical activity until exhaustion. At least one participant later sought medical treatment for injuries sustained during the event,” the sheriff’s office said. “The investigation has revealed there may be additional victims or witnesses. We strongly encourage anyone with information to contact our office.”
