Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir with the Houston Police Department said the shooting happened after the suspect threatened officers with a baseball bat and a chunk of concrete.
Bashir said it all began Friday morning at around 8:30 a.m., when a security guard called police and said a man swinging a baseball bat charged at him. The guard fired a taser at the man, but it had no effect. The suspect than left the scene.
Officers arrived, took a report, and began looking for the man, but they were unable to find him.
Later on, the same guard saw the man and called police again. Officers responded shortly after 3 p.m. and found the man, who they say was still holding a bat, in a strip center on Wirt Road.
According to Bashir, officers got out of their car and the man became aggressive. The officers ordered the man to drop the bat multiple times in both English and Spanish.
At certain points, Bashir said the man threatened the officers with the bat. Two officers fired their tasers at the man, but Bashir said it had no effect.
Bashir said the man then walked across Hammerly Blvd. and at some point, Bashir said the man saw a chunk of concrete on the ground, picked it up and threatened the officers with it.
At this point, Bashir said one of the officers fired twice at the man. They provided aid to the man, but he died at the scene,
The man who died is believed to have been in his fifties. Bashir believes the reason the tasers had no effect on him is because he was wearing a heavy jacket.
“This is a very sad event, we are going to make sure this incident is investigated thoroughly,” Bashir said.
According to Bashir, the officer who fired his weapon has been with HPD for three years. He will be placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of an investigation.
Bashir also said body cam video from the incident will be released within 30 days.
