HOUSTON – You’ve heard of speed dating, but a roommate matching site is helping Houston residents waste no time in finding their ideal person to live with.

SUGGESTED: Here’s how much money you need to make in Houston to ‘live comfortably’

According to SpareRoom, which is spearheading Thursday’s event in Montrose, the way it works is like a typical networking/mixer event for people advertising rooms to rent and looking for a place. Unlike speed dating, though, there’s no table or timer; you just show up, choose a sticker that says “I need a room” or “I need a roommate,” grab a drink, and make new friends (or meet your next potential roommate).

Let’s face it: Houston is getting more expensive, and according to SpareRoom’s recent rental data, the cost of renting a room has increased by 30% compared to 2024, and that’s IF you get a place because of how high the demand to find a home is.

SpareRoom founder and CEO, Rupert Hunt, said in a written statement that by allowing people to meet in a chill setting, it creates a more positive, social experience instead of a stressful, pressured one.

In other words, chances are, you’ll meet someone who matches your “neat-freak” or a couch potato vibe.

“I’ve found roommates through Speed Roommating myself, more than once,” he explained. “Expect a friendly vibe where plenty of people show up solo. Great conversation is guaranteed, and hopefully, you’ll find a like-minded person you click with. For those new to Houston, it’s also a great opportunity to make new connections in the area and get local recommendations.”

SpareRoom previously held its Speed Roommating event in April, and due to its success and popular demand, they’re hosting another event on Thursday, May 8 at UNITi Montrose on Richmond Avenue from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The event is free to attend, with drinks provided, but you have to register beforehand. Plus, Hunt shares my sentiments that you can never have too many friends.

“Loneliness is a growing problem for all generations and people are looking to attend more events in the real world because they spend too much time online or working remotely,” he said. “It’s just not easy to read someone’s body language, feel their energy or create a spark through a screen or a series of messages.”
