VIDEO: University of St. Thomas students, professors react to new pope announcement

White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, signaling the election of a new pope on the second day of the conclave.

At the University of St. Thomas, students gathered to watch the proceedings from Rome. The watch party drew interest as the crowd reacted to the historic moment thousands of miles away.

The 133 cardinals eligible to vote had been sequestered inside the chapel after a first round of voting ended Wednesday with no decision.

The Vatican has not yet released the name of the new pope.
