We filed a public records request with the Texas Attorney General’s Office and got these numbers:

2020: 154

2021: 207

2022: 506

2023: 781

2024: 696

Last week, we introduced you to Isabel Aguirre, whose stepson told us he was swindled into purchasing solar panels and is now dealing with a $98,000 lien on his house.

These numbers show the problem is widespread, and state lawmakers are considering a number of bills to crack down on solar-related scams.

Senate Bill 1036 would require solar panel salespeople to register with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

House Bill 1640 would require the Texas Public Utility Commission to create a consumer guide for home solar systems.
