274,000 reusable bags to be given away by H-E-B on Earth Day

This year’s Earth Day tote from H-E-B features a Galveston-inspired design—and it might just win you a Texas State Parks pass. (H-E-B)

In a Texas-sized Earth Day tradition, H-E-B will distribute 274,000 reusable bags on April 22, adding to the more than 3.2 million it has given out since 2008.

The giveaway will take place starting at 8 a.m. at all H-E-B, Central Market, Joe V’s Smart Shop, and Mi Tienda locations, while supplies last.

This year’s bag features a design inspired by Galveston Island State Park, marking the second edition in a three-year series showcasing scenic Texas locations. Customers who want more bags can also purchase additional ones for $1.50.

As an added Earth Day surprise, one customer at each store will be selected at random to receive a Texas State Parks annual pass.

From March 4 to April 4, 792 schools across Texas participated in H-E-B’s Annual School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge, collecting over 6.7 million plastic bags—surpassing last year’s record of five million. Top-performing schools will receive H-E-B gift cards as prizes.
