Detroit arsonist caught on video believed to be fleeing to Tennessee or Texas

Authorities in Detroit are seeking help from the public after a man was caught on video setting a car on fire, resulting in a massive explosion. The suspect, who may have fled to Tennessee or Texas, is wanted for arson and causing extensive damage

The Detroit Fire Investigation Division, a collaborative effort between Detroit Police and Fire personnel, is appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the individual responsible for the arson.

The incident happened on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 1:43 p.m. in the parking lot of the Post Office located in the 17300 block of Harper in Detroit. Surveillance footage shows a heavy-set male suspect approaching a white 2018 Chevy Traverse.

The suspect is seen breaking the front passenger side window with an object before pouring an accelerant inside the vehicle. Moments later, he ignites the accelerant, causing a powerful explosion that results in burns to his face and knocks him to the ground.

The explosion not only destroyed the targeted vehicle but also damaged a total of six cars, with four vehicles being completely burned. The suspect, last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with a white shirt underneath and blue jeans, is believed to have fled Detroit and may be traveling to either Tennessee or Texas.
