Houston Mayor John Whitmire held a press conference to provide the latest updates on the anticipated weather conditions across Houston this week.
Among other announcements, Mayor Whitmire announced that George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) will be closed Tuesday, starting at midnight Tuesday morning.
United Airlines provided KPRC 2 with the following statement:
“We’re working with our customers who are impacted by the planned airport closures in Houston and have waivers in place for cities that are preparing for winter weather. Customers should visit united.com to check their flight status and view the latest information. We encourage travelers to download the United app and use our Agent on Demand tool, which enables them to bypass a line to speak with agents and get assistance via text, FaceTime or phone call.”
The mayor also said he wanted to warn Houstonians about the severity of this week’s weather and inform the people across the city how they can help.
“I’ve been convinced that we’re about to experience a very serious and dangerous weather episode,” Mayor Whitmire said.
Whitmire said that Houstonians need to limit their outdoor activities across the next few days to ensure that the community and the first responders stay safe.
“Houstonians can expect based on the data... to wake up to icy conditions Tuesday,” Whitmire added.
Warming centers will also open their doors across the city.
Houston Independent School District, as well as other districts across the Houston area, will be closed for the early part of the week.
Whitmire was joined by the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management, Houston Police Department, Houston Fire Department and other public safety officials.
