Scammers are taking advantage of the chaos, faking documents to steal home titles and drain equity, often leaving homeowners completely in the dark until they’re hit with an eviction notice.

John Summer from Home Title Lock says this happens to thousands of people every year, and it’s even worse after disasters like this. Former title theft criminal Matthew Cox, who’s now an advocate, is on a mission to help homeowners protect themselves from these schemes.

Experts stress the importance of keeping an eye on title changes and securing your documents to stay ahead of these scams. It’s a serious problem, but knowing how to protect yourself can make all the difference.
