HOUSTON – Testing for soil samples in the notorious Fifth Ward cancer cluster has been postponed, officials confirmed, after the devastating severe weather across Houston earlier this month.
Initially, the soil samples were scheduled to be tested Wednesday, but due to the deadly windstorm a.k.a derecho, officials said testing will be delayed.
“The aftermath of last week’s storm is causing further delay in the start of soil sampling in Fifth Ward,” officials said via email to KPRC 2. “It is unclear when all areas will have power restored. There is also a considerable amount of debris that could impact sampling locations. As a result, the U.S. EPA has recommended postponing.”
A new date for testing has not been announced, as of this writing, but organizers said they will announce it once confirmed by Union Pacific and the EPA.
