What happened

The 87-year-old woman told investigators she was driving through garage 22, located at 6620 Main Street, when she saw a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta going the wrong-way, nearly causing a head-on collision, docs read.

The woman said she rolled down her window to get the driver’s attention and the woman began to curse her out and then spit on the woman’s mouth.

As a result, the 87-year-old woman, who is permanently disabled and has a deteriorating spine, got out of her vehicle. According to court documents, she also requires crutches to help her walk.

The woman admitted being upset with the driver who spit on her and was trying to remove the spit from her mouth. The two women started to argue and the victim said when she tried to take a photo of the driver’s vehicle with her cellphone, the woman attacked her.

During the attack, the victim lost her balance and fell to the ground, documents read. The suspect reportedly punched the woman and took off in the victim’s cellphone.

The victim suffered a fractured bone on the right side of her face, along with a black eye and abrasion.

During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Newton.

Suspect admits to assault during interview

During the phone interview, Newton reportedly admitted to the investigator that she was driving the wrong way and nearly collided with the woman. She said the victim was already outraged and was the aggressor, so she exited her vehicle because the woman was not “listening to her.”

Newton reportedly said she “bucked” at the woman and decided to get back inside her vehicle but that the woman got out of her vehicle. She then claims that the woman allegedly spat on her and attempted to drag her out of her Volkswagen.

According to documents, Newton said she defended herself by hitting the woman a couple of times. She reportedly said she stopped because “the lady has nothing for me.”

Newton reportedly believed the woman may have been on drugs because she was screaming “Somebody help me, somebody help me” while she held the woman’s head. She also admitted taking the woman’s cell phone because she wanted her to follow her but gave it to security in the garage and left.
