Knife-wielding assault suspect dies after being shot by officers in Galveston

GALVESTON, Texas – A suspect in an aggravated assault in Galveston died after being shot by officers Saturday.

The Galveston Police Department said it happened around 10 a.m. in the 2100 block of Avenue P.

Police said they arrived at the scene and found the suspect, who had allegedly assaulted a tree trimmer while brandishing a knife. EMS and fire personnel were already on scene treating the victim when officers arrived.

Upon confronting the suspect, police said shots were fired by the officers, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken to the trauma center at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston where he later died.

The suspect has not yet been identified.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
