1 killed, 1 hospitalized in NW Houston apartment fire

HOUSTON – A man died, and a woman was hospitalized due to an apartment fire in northwest Houston on Saturday, according to the Houston Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the 5300 block of Deep Forest Drive at approximately 12:24 a.m. regarding a fire at an apartment.

When first responders arrived, they saw fire coming from an apartment on the first floor and an apartment on the second floor.

Firefighters then began fighting the fire.

“One victim had already removed herself (from the apartment). A ladder crew pulled out the second victim. Both of them were transported to the hospital,” HFD Deputy Chief Roger Westhoff said.

The woman was able to get out of the apartment with her two grandchildren, but the man died due to the fire.

The woman also had injuries from smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Firefighters were not injured, and they were able to contain the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
