Family says 17-year-old battled mental health issues before fatally shooting his father, injuring mother

CUT AND SHOOT, Texas – A teenager is now in custody after reportedly killing his father and critically injuring his mother in a shooting after an argument at the family’s Montgomery County home.

The shooting took place in the Deer Pines Subdivision near Conroe on Wednesday around 9:20 p.m.

The teenager was identified as 17-year-old Tra Vontay Constantine. He reportedly turned himself into the Montgomery County jail and has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Murder.

Deputies said when they arrived at the home Wednesday night, they found the boy’s father who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Medics attempted to perform life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The father has since been identified as 41-year-old Leroy Constantine Jr.

Officials also said that the teen also shot his mother. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK. KPRC2 Reporter Corley Peel spoke with the teen’s mother, Romika Constantine. Romika said she is trying to wrap her head around everything.

Tra Vontay Constatine’s Grandmother, Degerine Spikes, said her daughter, Romika and Leroy are Junior High Sweethearts. She said the couple has a love story that not many can write.

“They’ve been together 29 years,” said Spikes.

She said Romika rushed to save Leroy after they were both shot by their son.

“When he got shot, the bullet went through him and hit her in the neck. She was out for a minute and she crawled to him to help him. That’s how real their love was,” said Spikes.

Spikes said her grandson has battled with mental health issues.

“My grandson, they did everything they could. They did everything they could to help him with his mental issues. I mean they went to bat for him. He’s been in different facilities and stuff trying to get help,” said Spikes.

She said Leroy was a father, grandfather and loving husband who would help anyone in need.

“He had a smile that was out this world. He had a kind spirit when you meet him, you never forget him because he’s always smiling,” said Spikes.

She said her grandson’s true self is more like his dad. Caring and kind.

“We love him. We’re gonna miss him. I love my grandson and he needs help,” said Spikes.

Spikes said Leroy and Romika had three children and four adopted children. Their family are asking for prayers from the community during this difficult time.

Tra Vontay is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
