FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A big rig crash created a major mess on the Southwest Freeway after crashing into a concrete pillar early Tuesday morning.

According to Sugar Land officials, the 18-wheeler was hauling watermelons while heading northbound on 59 near University Boulevard South when it crashed.
TRAFFIC ALERT Fort Bend Hazmat is on scene assisting Sugarland Fire & Police with a crash affecting Northbound US 59 in Sugarland at University Blvd, the Feeder Rd & several main lanes are closed at this time with a crash & oil spill.

Police and firefighters at the scene said the back container from the truck was ripped open, causing watermelons to be spilled onto the roadway and the feeder.

Authorities closed 2-3 lanes of the highway and 2 lanes of the feeder around 3:45 a.m.
Hazmat officials were on the scene as they worked to clean up spilled fuel.
No injuries were reported.
