For 55 years the Houston Area Urban League has been focusing on a vision of enabling Black and other “marginalized communities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights,” according to its vision statement. This week HAUL will host the National Urban League Conference, which means leaders from as many as 90 Urban League Affiliates will converge on Houston to seek common solutions to some of the problems that impact underserved communities. Judson Robinson III is the President and CEO of the Houston Area Urban League. He is a guest on this week’s Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall and said securing economic stability is one of the keys to that success.
“We do that through the programs of education, of housing, of workforce, entrepreneurship and health,” he said. “You know those are kind of the cornerstones to make sure everyone has a successful life.”
Seeking success through education
Eric Goodie is the Executive Vice President of the Houston Area Urban League and said one of the ways to improve the success of families is to focus on education and that means “helping both the children and the parents to participate in the academic environment to be successful.”
“That includes mentoring and tutoring and family engagement for capacity building so that they can support the child in achieving academic excellence,” Goodie said.
Building generational wealth
Economic empowerment is one of the programs of the Houston Area Urban League designed to provide people with the knowledge they will need to establish a pattern of success to achieve generational wealth.
“Depending on your neighborhood or your zip code or family structure or whatever, you might not be able to have access to some of the things that others are able to access,” said Robinson. “We want to shrink that equality wrap to make sure there’s greater equity. And, that’s how we do it at the Urban League.”
