She’s 99. He’s 100. Louisiana’s longest married couple, Margery and Ira Milan, celebrate 81 years of marriage

Ira has nothing but hope for the future. ‘I’m striving for another 81! Why quit now?’

NEW ORLEANS – Margery and Ira Milan married in January of 1942.

Eighty-one years later, they’re still together — she at 99 years of age, and he at 100. During a ceremony on Valentine’s Day, Louisiana recognized the longevity of their love by naming the Milans the longest married couple in the state.

While celebrating the achievement, Ira said he had nothing but hope for the future.

“I’m striving for another 81! Why quit now?” Ira said. “We even kept in touch when I was in the military. We kept in touch with each other almost every day. I’d write a letter from wherever I was.”

Ira and Margery have five children, eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
