Houston’s job market poised to grow in some sectors this year

HOUSTON – If you’re thinking about making a career change, 2023 may be the year to make that leap.

Houston’s job market remains strong and is poised to grow in some sectors, including health care. That’s according to Workforce Solutions.

Every January, a lot of Houstonians make resolutions to land a new or better job. While Houston’s unemployment rate, as of December, is trending higher than the rest of the state at 4%, if you want to work in healthcare, energy, education, or construction in Houston, 2023 may just be your year.

“Employers continue to come to us with job openings so it is a very vibrant job market right now,” said Michelle Castrow with Workforce Solutions.

Castrow said those four sectors are all starting the year off with a strong hiring market, in part, thanks to innovation, particularly in healthcare and energy.

It’s a trend she expects will continue into 2023, even as other industries are hit with layoffs and cutbacks.

Castrow said to take advantage of what’s out there and find the career or job that fits you, you’ve got to be prepared before making a move.

“It’s about taking a look at the skills that you already have and how those can apply to new opportunities,” Castrow added.

She recommends updating your resume, highlighting the skills and abilities employers are looking for today. Evaluate where you’re lacking and consider learning new skills online.

“You can learn skills. You can get certifications. and those can help you transition into new or better jobs building on the skills that you already bring,” Castrow said.
