Mayor Turner to unveil 10 art commissions created during COVID-19 pandemic for Houston airports

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will join the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Houston Airports Tuesday to unveil 10 works of art commissioned by the City of Houston during the first stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news release. (City of Houston)

HOUSTON – Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will join the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Houston Airports Tuesday to unveil 10 works of art commissioned by the City of Houston during the first stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news release.

The works include portraits, monumental sculptures, suspended pieces, an LED light ribbon and a 240-foot-long immersive mural officially endorsed by UNESCO. the news release said.

In June 2020, the City of Houston offered support to the local creative community. The Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs put a call out for qualified artists to design, fabricate and install 10 major permanent works at George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports.

In total, the city has invested over $4.5 million in art commission projects released in mid-2020, the release said.

Houston Airports Arts Curator Alton Dulaney will guide the tour.
