VIDEO: Armed suspect flees with nothing after attempting to rob woman walking dog in west Houston, HPD says

HOUSTON – A woman who was going on a normal morning walk with her dog was targeted by a suspect who attempted to rob her in a west Houston neighborhood, according to the Houston Police Department.

The incident was reported on Jan. 27 at 5:49 a.m. in the 6300 block of Del Monte Drive.

The woman and dog were walking on the sidewalk when a man was seen running toward their direction, police said. The man pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her property. He then tried to snatch her dog’s leash but she yelled at him to get away. The suspect ran off without getting anything.

“It was terrifying,” said the woman who only wanted to be identified as Danine. “The only thing going through my mind was, ‘I’m going to get shot, and you’re not taking my dog.’”

She explained what happened during the early morning walk with her dog.

“I heard running behind me,” she said. “I turned around and there was a gentleman with a gun in my face pointing at me saying, ‘Give me everything. Give me everything.’”

In the surveillance video released by police, you can hear Danine screaming. You can also hear the dog named Bogie barking. Danine said the guy then reached for the dog’s leash.

“I think he just wanted to get the leash so that the dog would run away, but that wasn’t going to happen,” Danine said.

As she screamed for her husband, she said the guy ran off without getting anything and she was not hurt.

“I’m very lucky and I know that,” she said.

Police said they need help identifying the suspect.

“I’m hoping that somebody, somehow recognizes them and steps forward,” Danine said. “I’m hoping that it scares them so they don’t come in this area again.”

She also wants others to pay attention when they’re out walking so they can stay safe.

Police released the surveillance video below of the incident in hopes someone will identify the suspect. Crime Stoppers is offering to pay up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
