Houston mayor, local resettlement group to welcome Afghan refugees to city

HOUSTON – The Houston Afghan Resettlement Fund and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner are hosting a news conference Tuesday at City Hall to welcome newly resettled Afghan refugees arriving in Houston due to the conflict in Afghanistan.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. KPRC 2 will share a livestream of the event in the video player at the top of this article.

The four CEOs from the resettling agencies will share Afghan resettlement updates, announce new donations to the Fund and restate the need for continued community support. Additionally, an Afghan SIV staff member will share his 6-year journey as an Afghan translator with the U.S. Marines and his experience resettling parolees in Houston.

In September 2021, CEOs from The Alliance, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston and YMCA of Greater Houston announced they formed HARF to raise support for vetted Afghan families who are resettling to the Houston area.

The Houston Afghan Resettlement Fund has already aided more than 1,000 Afghan refugees collectively and anticipates approximately 6,000 more to arrive in Houston through 2022.
