2 homes catch fire in San Leon; family reunited with 2 dogs

SAN LEON, Texas – Two houses caught fire in San Leon on Wednesday.

The fires were reported at neighboring houses in the 1600 block of Dick Bay.

Video from Sky 2 showed one of the homes had burned to the ground, while firefighters battled flames shooting from the roof of the second house.

Six people were able to get out okay and family members were able to be reunited with their two dogs who had been missing for several hours.

“How do you feel that they are out and safe?”

“Very happy,” responded a family member who did not want to be identified.

It was the ending the family had been hoping for. Their two dogs, Rowdy and Bear, were back in their arms after a massive early morning fire scared them off.

“About 5 a.m. I saw the glow out my front door window. I was sure I was gonna see an ambulance. When I poked my head up to the window and saw the fire, I screamed, “Honey!” as loud as a I could to wake my wife and she went nuts,” said neighbor Perry Lazer.

The San Leon fire chief says they got the call around 5 a.m. to the 1600 block of Duck Bay Drive.

At least five different fire departments rushed in to help battle the massive flames.

“This one over here., it was pretty intense. The one in the middle was pretty intense, but we got in and did what we could and knocked it down. Response time was very quick,” said San Leon Fire Chief Ken Keller.

But not before the fire spread.

Flames started in the middle home, completely leveling it. Then destroyed a trailer and damaged two other homes next door.

But those who got out say they are happy everyone is okay.

One man suffered minor burns to his back.

There is no word yet on where or how the fire started.

The Galveston County Fire Marshal is now investigating.
