Question: How did Cypress get its name?

Answer: According to the Texas State Historical Association, Cypress was named after German immigrants began settling along Cypress Creek in the 1840s. Cypress Creek is known for its cypress trees that grow in its loamy soil.

With the construction of a dance hall and a one-room schoolhouse which eventually morphed into Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, the biggest economic boom for Cypress didn’t begin until 1900 where oil was struck from an artesian well. Dairy and rice farming also drove the economy.

Many of the street names and schools such as Matzke Elementary and Huffmeister Road were named after settlers beginning in the 1980s.
