La Marque residents recover, prepare for flooding

LA MARQUE, TX – Nine inches of heavy rain fell on Texas City within 24 hours, flooding roads and stalling out unfortunate drivers; the floodwaters in nearby LaMarque, meanwhile, are quickly receding into drainage ditches.

But on Saturday at the height of the storm, residents on Wisteria Street watched waves of water slapping against their homes.

“It came up so fast and furious it was really scary. The water on our road was so high that whenever a car came by it would send these waves of water right at us. You could feel the waves hitting the house,” Anthony Urdiales, a resident, said.

At Shae Bagot’s house on Wisteria, the floodwaters didn’t just rise against her home, the water breached her windows, doors and flooded her place with 5 inches of water.

“It’s hard to believe how fast the water started coming in,” Bagot said.

Now armed with a brooms and disinfectant and a series of small heaters, Bagot’s husband, several friends and herself are cleaning up the mess and bracing for yet another expected round of rain.

More rain is expected to hit overnight, sometime after midnight.
