Gov. Abbott: Wear blue Friday to honor Deputy Goforth

HOUSTON – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was is asking supporters to wear blue in honor of fallen Harris County Darren Goforth.

Abbott made the request when he delivered the keynote speech Thursday afternoon at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Houston Pachyderm Club, a Republican group that works to get people involved in government and politics.

In his opening remarks, Abbott asked for every Texan to light up the state in support of law enforcement Friday morning at the start of Deputy Darren Goforth's funeral.

The governor requested that citizens turn their headlights on at 11 a.m. Friday for one minute, and requested law enforcement officials to turn their police lights during that time as well. He said it's a show of support for those in blue uniforms.

"(Law enforcement officials) are vital to safe communities," Abbott said. "We are a nation and a state that depends upon the rule of law... that ensures that we remain the freest country in the history of the world."

He also encouraged all Texans to wear blue on Friday.
