Floodwaters bring out pigs, snakes, deer in neighborhoods

Animals displaced by floods searching for dry land

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – As floodwaters continue to keep many Southeast Texas residents out of their homes, it is also driving wild animals away from their habitat and into potential danger.

Many roads in Lake Jackson are completely flooded and that has brought out many animals like feral pigs and piglets who are navigating rushing floodwaters.

“They’re displaced like everyone else is," said Capt. Shae Guinn with the Texas Game Wardens. "They’re looking for dry land so we’ve seen deer, pigs, snakes. They’re just trying to find a dry spot.”

“We do ask our citizens to be careful to watch for them," said Ryan Cade, Brazoria County commissioner. "Drive slowly and give them the right-of-way because they’re scared.“

Experts say these wild animals may show up in driveways and backyards, so they’re asking folks not to approach the animals.

“In these stressful situations, if they get backed into a corner where they are in a small area or if a pig has a bunch of piglets, you don’t need to approach any of these animals, just stay away from them," said Guinn. "I know people want to try and help them but it’s not like helping your family dog, it’s a wild animal that can hurt you.”

Texas Game Warden officials said if they see an animal in distress they will try to help the animal, but their primary focus is  helping people stranded in flooded homes.
