Downtown urban art mural vandalized during festival

HOUSTONBy: Allen Le/ Staff

A graffiti-decorated concrete wall that's part of the Houston Urban Experience Mural Festival in east downtown was vandalized overnight.

The suspect vandalized the art piece by splashing a can of paint on it.

The mural on Leeland and Emanuel streets was created by an artist name GONZO247, who co-created and produced the festival.

"Really, it's just unfortunate. It's not even about me, it's about the city. We are trying to do something positive for the community," he said.

The crime was caught on surveillance video and police are hoping it will help them track down the person responsible.

"When they find the person who did it, maybe he can answer those questions," GONZO247 said. "I felt as a community artist here, I felt we have reached a certain level of integrity or certain level of maturity but as you can plainly see, not everyone is there yet."

The spray paint design, which took GONZO247 weeks to complete, is one of 25 murals that covers walls along a 17-mile strip throughout downtown including the EaDo, East End and Washington Avenue art districts.

Artists from around the world have flown in to Houston for the HUE Mural Festival started last week and will end on Saturday.
