Mother, 19, killed in drive-by shooting in NE Houston

Police search for newer-model, black Camaro

HOUSTON – A woman was killed during a drive-by shooting at a northeast Houston apartment complex Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The shooting was reported about 12:20 p.m. at the Uvalde Ranch Apartments at 5300 S. Lake Houston Parkway, near the intersection of Wallisville Road.

Sgt. Mark Holbrook, of Houston police, said that a car drove through the parking lot of the complex and someone fired at least five shots into a second-floor apartment, killing the woman.

The woman's family identified the victim as 19-year-old Lekendra Childs, the mother of a 2-year-old.

Holbrook said the woman's boyfriend came home and found her body.

The car involved in the shooting was described as a black, newer-model Camaro with tinted windows, Holbrook said. The gunman is believed to have a shaved head.

Witnesses told police there may have been another person in the car.

Social media users pointed to a woman who allegedly once had a relationship with Kendra's boyfriend.

A picture circulating on Facebook and Twitter showed the woman standing in front of a black Camaro.

Houston police spent hours questioning the woman at her Southeast Houston home Tuesday where a black Camaro was in the driveway.

HPD tells Channel 2 investigators recovered a vehicle and processed it, but would not say if it was the car used in the drive-by.

Wednesday afternoon, that woman's mother defended her saying,

"She was not arrested or anything like that, she had nothing to do with that. I'm sorry for everybody that has to go through this, the family as well that that lost a daughter. I'm a mother myself, trust me I am, but my daughter did not kill that girl."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
