This is why gun owners are destroying their weapons on camera

HOUSTON – People are destroying their guns and posting video of the process on social media following the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people died.

Amanda Meyer, a gun owner for five years, decided to destroy her handgun and discussed her reasons as she did so.

In a video she posted on Facebook with the hashtag #onelessgun, Meyer said, "I'm not going to let the Second Amendment anymore be used as an excuse for considering children as collateral damage."

Meyer said she's not opposed to the Second Amendment, but thinks pro-gun activists and politicians have taken it too far under the current interpretation.

She also believes people don't need automatic weapons.

Scott Pappalardo is another gun owner who has destroyed his weapon on social media after the Parkland shooting.

Pappalardo posted a video on Facebook with the hashtag #oneless. In his video, Pappalardo takes on common thoughts about gun ownership and why he decided to destroy his gun rather than sell it.

"I mean think about it, is the right to own this gun more important than someone's life? A weapon like this that can cause so much death and destruction? I mean look at the pictures of those victims. Is that right more important? I don't think so. So I'm going to make sure that will never happen with my weapon."

Pappalardo then uses a saw to cut his gun in pieces.

"I'm not saying that this is for everyone," Pappalardo said. "And this isn't the answer to solve all the problems. And quite frankly, there is no answer. No one thing is going to change it. And there always will be people who want to kill and they'll do it one way or another, but they're not going to do it with this gun. And I'm hoping someone will see it and say maybe I'll do the same thing. And for all you haters out there who think I'm very stupid for doing this, I hope and I pray that it doesn't take the barrel of one of these guns pointed at your child to change your mind."

His video was liked on Facebook more than 290,000 times and has more than 339,000 shares.
