Carjacker shoots himself in head after forcing woman into high-speed chase on I-45

HOUSTON – A carjacker is dead after he shot himself in the head Sunday night after a police chase that ended in a crash, Harris County deputies said.

The incident started as an emergency call about a Hispanic man, wearing a Texans jersey and firing shots at several different people at 1960 and Cali Road.at 7:09 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they were told that same man had jumped into a red pick-up truck and carjacked a man and woman inside that truck.

Witnesses said the man pointed a gun at the couple and told them to drive him where he wanted. Officials said the woman drove the vehicle while he pointed a gun at her.

Deputies pursued the vehicle for 25 minutes up and down I-45 until the driver of that pick-up truck finally crashed into two different pick-up trucks at the busy intersection of I-45 and West Road at 7:58 p.m.

Deputies said at that point the carjacker ran out of the vehicle and to a gas station, where he was approached by multiple sheriff’s deputies. They said he pulled out his handgun, shot himself once in the head and died.

No other injuries were reported.

Three Frontage Road lanes are closed.

Officials are at the scene cleaning debris.
