HOUSTON – Do you have what it takes to be a spelling bee champion?
The nearly 300 young spellers at the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee took the Preliminaries Test, containing 12 words from Round One, 12 vocabulary questions from Round One, a Round Two vocabulary question and a Round Three vocabulary question. The total potential point score was 30 points, and spellers had the chance to earn three more points for each correct spelling.

If a speller misspelled a word in either the second or third rounds, then they were eliminated.
Forty spellers earned at least 29 points to qualify for the finals.
