Community leaders, families demand Mayor Turner sue Texas over Sanctuary Cities Bill

HOUSTON – Community leaders and families gathered Tuesday to demand that Mayor Sylvester Turner sue Texas over SB4, also known as the Sanctuary Cities Bill.

The Immigrant Families and Students in the Struggle organization called on Turner and city council members to takes steps toward a lawsuit.

"Our community and many of its leaders have been very patient and have continued to have trust in Mayor Turner. We are less than 100 days from SB4 being implemented. We do not need more promises of a welcoming Houston. We need the mayor and City Council to take action to protect Houston immigrant families," said Cesar Espinosa, executive director of FIEL.

FIEL advocates for just laws for immigrant youth, their families and access to higher education for all people regardless of immigration status, according to its website.

SB 4 aims to punish cities, law enforcement agencies and colleges that don’t cooperate with immigration officials.
