Top US intelligence official James Clapper: I submitted my resignation

(CNN) – Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the House Select Committee on Intelligence Thursday he had submitted his letter of resignation on Wednesday night.

"(I) submitted my letter of resignation last night, which felt pretty good," he said before the panel of lawmakers.

He added: "I have 64 days left and I'd have a pretty hard time with my wife going past that."

All members of an outgoing administration must submit a resignation at some point.

Gen. Mark Hertling, a CNN military analyst, said Clapper has long-served in the intelligence community and "has been under stress for decades."

"I also think he's painting a picture," he told CNN's Carol Costello on "Newsroom." "When you have a shake-up in leadership it does affect the organization. That is what Mr. Clapper is saying.
