ROUND ROCK, Texas – The shot that killed a Travis County deputy at his Round Rock home last week came from his own gun, according to police.
During the early morning of July 25, Sgt. Craig Hutchinson, 54, used his radio to report prowlers who were in his back yard. When officers arrived, they found the deputy had been shot.
During a press conference Wednesday, Round Rock police Chief Allen Banks said that an analysis of the projectile that killed Hutchinson indicates that it came from his own weapon.
“We are still gathering the facts in this case to determine what led to Sgt. Hutchinson’s death, including the possibilities of homicide or that it was self-inflicted,” Allen said.
Allen said that investigators have not identified a suspect in the case, and urged anyone with information to call the department’s tip line at 512-671-2767.
The case is still under investigation, Allen said.
Hutchinson was buried Tuesday.
