YES Prep student killed in police chase crash identified

HOUSTON – One person was killed during a police chase early Saturday morning in north Houston.

YES Prep confirms the woman killed, 18-year-old Jocelynn Valero, was killed in a crash that resulted from the chase.

"I did talk to her last night before she went, I told her to be careful," Mario Valero, Jocelynn's brother said. "She was the sister of four big brothers so we took care of her and we loved her and it's tragic her life had to end this way."

According to Houston police, it all started when an officer tried to pull over Edin Palacios Rodas in a white pickup truck around 1 a.m.

Police say Rodas drove off, leading police on a chase to the North Freeway feeder road.

Police say Rodas ran a red light at the intersection of the service road and Tidwell road and hit a car, killing Valero and sending the driver and boyfriend, Moises Avila, 18, to the hospital in serious condition.

Jocelynn and Avila were heading home from prom.

Rodas suffered minor injuries and police say he showed signs of intoxication.

Jocelynn's brother, Jose Valero, was killed in front of a nightclub in the early hours of April 7.

"She was only 18 years old," Delores Valero, Jocelynn's cousin, said. "It's two tragedies in a month and a week."

"We're not even done mourning...done finished mourning for my brother and for this to happen to my sister, it's just devastating and it's hard," Mario said.
