HOUSTON – When Americans want comfort food, most reach for a slice of pizza, according to a new Harris Poll survey.
Harris surveyed more than 2,000 Americans and found 15% prefer pizza as their favorite comfort food. Almost half as many participants chose chocolate and ice cream, which both tied for second at 7%.

Participants were also asked about when they like to eat comfort food. The survey found that 45% need their favorite meal when they are stressed. Women are more likely than men to have comfort food when under stress.
After a bad day, 43% turn to comfort food. One third say they will eat their favorites when depressed. Birthdays (37%) and having a really good day (38%) are also exceptions for indulging.
