Escaped inmate caught in Brazoria County

BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas – Authorities have captured an inmate who briefly escaped from the Brazoria County Jail Wednesday morning.

According to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, Thomas Ray Newman, 35, escaped from the county jail in the 3600 block of County Road 45 shortly before 8 a.m.

Newman bolted from the facility, ran across the back parking lot and into a 200-acre field.

He was captured within 20 minutes.  Jail officials took an immediate head count to ensure that Newman was the only inmate who fled.

Newman faces a new charge for escaping.

Officials say Brazoria County Jail has a current inmate population of 755.
