HFD: Several families displaced after fire tears through SW Houston apartments

HOUSTON – The Red Cross is helping out several families who lost their homes after an apartment fire swept through a southwest Houston apartment complex early Monday.

Flames sparked at the Belvedere Westchase apartments on Meadowglen Lane and Wilcrest Drive just after midnight.

Firefighters arrived around 12:45 a.m. Monday to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the top of the building.

Many residents were asleep when the fire started, and one of the neighbors began knocking on doors and screaming for others to get out.

"We heard someone yelling for us to get out, and I just grabbed my dog and told my husband to come on," said Jennifer Meza. "We went outside and saw all of the fire on the roof. I thanked my neighbor because if it wasn't for him we could have still been asleep," she said.

It took about 60 firefighters to bring the fire under control.

In the end, 12 units were affected.  Six sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.

Arson is investigating the cause.

No one was injured.
