SEABROOK, Texas – What began as a private family matter between two feuding adults has turned into a public spectacle that is now making national headlines.
For the past six months, Sharafat Khan has been sleeping and living in the yard after his wife, a local doctor, kicked him out of their million dollar mansion.
The couple's son, Zain, claims his father has been physically and verbally abusive toward his mother and in 2008 was accused of hitting her, according to court documents.
He even painted his father as a leach, who's been living off of her earnings. "We are ashamed that my father has caused all this problem and hate towards my mom. She is a hard-working physician who goes to work every day," Zain Khan wrote in Facebook posting to Channel 2's story that aired earlier this week. Khan says his son is wrong.
"He's getting paid partition fees so he has to speak for her. Otherwise she won't be able to finance him," Khan said. Khan told Channel 2 he's basically homeless and has no access to their money.
Zain said they've talked to social workers and have tried to get the 67- year-old help, despite his claims.
"My dad has full capability to find a place to live. I have made every attempt to help him out. He is determined not to leave," Zain Khan said.
"I don't want to make anybody miserable. The only thing is I love this house. I built it brick by brick and it's very hurting for me to leave," Sharafat Khan said.
Khan's name is on the deed to the house. A spokesperson with the community association says right now homeowners don't have a leg to stand on. That is, until Khan is a deemed a public nuisance. But as of right now it doesn't appear he's violating any local public vagrancy laws.
