Police: Employee kills manager, then himself in Hong Kong Food Market

HOUSTON – Two people are dead after an apparent murder-suicide at a grocery store in southwest Houston.

The shooting forced employees and shoppers to evacuate the Hong Kong Food Market in the 11200 block of Bellaire around 1 p.m. Monday.

Police said Thanh Duong, a warehouse employee,  pulled a .50-caliber pistol, and killed his supervisor, Hoang Vuong, before turning the gun on himself.

In the meat market nearby, store employee Dat Banh said he heard the shots and quickly left the store.

"I hear the pop, pop. That's it. I didn't see anything," Banh said.

The grocery and the mall it anchors were quickly evacuated. Shopper Kim Le was walking in with her two children.

"When I walked in, they stopped me at the door already and said there had been a shooting," Le said.

Homicide investigators said the shooting was recorded by the store security cameras. They said the video shows the employee shooting the supervisor within a minute of walking up to him as other warehouse employees worked nearby.

"As far as motive, we talked to several employees inside and there's not a motive," Officer Wendell Gilbert with the HPD Homicide Division said.

Homicide and crime scene investigators were still at the scene late Monday afternoon. The store and the market remained closed.

The motive for the shootings remain unknown.
