Thomas was one of the first African-American officers for HPD.

"I am saddened to hear of Mr. Thomas' passing," HPD Chief Charles A. McClelland said. "He was a man who I respected immensely and was honored to know and call my friend. The Houston Police Department and the City of Houston was a better place of having had him as an officer."

HPD's headquarters at 1200 Street was renamed for Thomas at a ceremony on July 27.

The Houston Police Department said services for Thomas will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church at 3826 Wheeler Avenue.
