Teen who escaped from Harris County Jail captured in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – Members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force have captured an inmate who escaped from the Harris County Jail.  Jorge Mendez, 17, was arrested at an apartment complex in southeast Houston around 11:40 a.m. Monday.

On Sunday, Mendez was being transported from the HPD Central Jail to the Harris County Jail when he managed to slip away around 2:15 a.m.

Mendez and other prisoners were removed from the transport bus in preparation for being booked into the Harris County Jail when he freed himself from his restraints and fled on foot.

Further investigation led police to Mendez's whereabouts and he was taken into custody without incident.

Mendez is now charged with engaging in organized crime and felony escape.
