HOUSTON – A woman died while in the custody of the Houston Police Department on Sunday.
Police said they were responding to a disturbance at a business in northwest Houston where a 29-year-old woman was acting erratically.
Officials said that the Houston Fire Department initially responded to the scene. KPRC 2 was told the woman was going to be taken to jail to be booked on a public intoxication of an unknown substance charge.
Authorities said she was found unresponsive before being booked in the HPD Southeast jail, at 8300 Mykawa Road.
The woman was given CPR by emergency medical services but was pronounced dead after being taken to Ben Taub Hospital, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police said they are waiting on autopsy results. Officials said the woman's identity is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences
The case remains under investigation by HPD's homicide and internal affairs divisions.
