HOUSTON – Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to rescue a pizza delivery driver from his car after a crash Wednesday night.

Around 10:40 p.m. a Papa John's delivery driver pulled up to the intersection of the Katy Freeway Service Road and Patterson Street. Utility workers with the City of Houston were working on the traffic lights, which were blinking red in all directions.

The delivery driver stopped and then began to head north on Patterson Street through the intersection, when an SUV heading west on the Katy Freeway Service Road ran the red light. The SUV slammed into the side of the delivery car, sending the car rolling into a nearby parking lot. Firefighters with the Houston Fire Department's Heavy Rescue unit had to extricate him from the car using the Jaws of Life.

The deliver driver was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. He was expected to live.

The woman behind the wheel of the SUV was also taken to the hospital. As of Thursday morning, she was in stable condition.

Police didn't believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck.
