By Marievel Santiago

HOUSTON - The Houston SPCA rescued a 4-month-old kitten that was trapped in a highway drain during rush hour traffic Thursday.

The SPCA rescue team responded to the scene at 6:15 p.m. where the kitten was found hiding in a drain on the overpass of Interstate 610 and Kirby.

"It required a big team. The crews wore a lot of safety gear and had to bring everything from nuts, harnesses and ropes just to get him out," Brian Latham, SPCA director of Communications and Marketing, said.

It took about two hours to rescue the kitten, which was stuck between four lanes of traffic at the 30-foot bridge.

"Kirby" the kitten was examined by veterinarians after the rescue and is now safe under SPCA care.

Latham said ‘"Kirby" is doing well now and is recovering quickly.

"He was a little nervous at first but ‘Kirby' is in great shape, in good health and he is purring like crazy."
