Police looking for physical therapist accused of public lewdness

HOUSTON – Houston police have been looking for Parijat Kumar for nearly one year.

Kumar, who once worked for Premier Performance Physical Therapy in the Galleria area, has been charged with public lewdness.

According to the Houston Police Department, two women came forward last summer and said Kumar fondled them.

Court records indicate: Kumar "unlawfully knowingly engage in an act of sexual contact with intent to arouse and gratify the sexual desire of the defendant."

However, charges weren't filed until just recently and KPRC 2 wanted to know why.

"It's not a violent crime," said KPRC 2 legal analyst Brian Wice. "It's something in the grand scheme of things it's not going to be first up in the call queue."

Houston police said when the allegations surfaced, the Harris County District Attorney's Office would not accept the charges.

The case went to a grand jury and it wasn't until March when the jury announced it would accept the charge of public lewdness.

Wice was not surprised with how long the process took.

"While we like to think that every case matters to the people ... involved, taking a matter into a grand jury is a lot like calling a help desk when your computer goes down," said Wice. "Calls are going to be answered in the order in which they are received and sometimes that is a little frustrating."

KPRC 2 has reached out to Premier Performance Physical Therapy for comment but no one returned calls or emails.

Kumar had not been arrested as of Wednesday.
