New pen-like device erases wrinkles, acne scars and more

HOUSTON – A new device the size of a pen is erasing wrinkles, acne scars and more with little to no downtime.  Plus, doctors say the treatment is effective for all skin types just about anywhere on the body.

Mary Beth Strayer told KPRC Channel 2, "I decided to get SkinPen because when I would look in the mirror, I would see the fine lines and the 'creepiness' under my eyes."

Strayer heard about the SkinPen from Houston Dermatologist Dr. Sherry Ingraham.

Strayer said, "I have tried some other treatments, however they don't get into the eye treatment as easily as the SkinPen did. So I did notice quite a bit of difference with that."

Dr. Sherry Ingraham with Advanced Dermatology explained, "What the pen does is really give the patient a newer way to get some dramatic results."

The SkinPen is an in-office rejuvenation treatment that can help with fine lines and wrinkles, even stretch marks.

Dr. Ingraham said, "It essentially pokes hundreds of fine columns of tissue damage into the skin through the microneedles and this allows new collagen and elastin to come in and actually make the skin brighter and smoother."

Dr. Ingraham said it's an especially exciting alternative for those scarred by acne.

She explained, "Previously, we could only offer them really deeper treatments or expensive treatments.  This offers them affordable and doable treatment with minimal downtime."

Plus, SkinPen can be used on all skin types.

Dr. Ingraham added, "Anyone is a candidate for SkinPen and that is what is so unique about this procedure. When patients have darker skin types, often we have to avoid certain lasers because they can generate heat which can lead to further darkening of the skin.  This procedure is excellent for all skin types and all skin colors."

Strayer said, "It was great! It was easy recovery. It was great."

It costs between $400 to $500 per treatment with the SkinPen.

Doctors say you'll notice a glow and smoother appearance in the immediate days and weeks.

With deeper scarring, it may take three to six months for the new collagen to surface.
